MATCH PLAY ROUND 2 HIGHLIGHTS

Well, it just goes to show you if we all had perfect lies, we would be one heck of golfers.  20 of us shot even par or better net today.   See, we can play like the pros if we have perfect lies, never being behind a tree, a sand trap, in a divot, ball on green fairways, puffed up shots out of the rough. Even that being said, Jason Bouzos, after driving through 3 different states this week, made it back in time to shoot even par GROSS today (59) lowest round of the year & his best ever at Birch.  He also shot the low net of the year (49), took out A flightier Javier Chavez 4 & 3, wins first place gross in the A flight, a closest to the pin on # 8, 2nd place low putts (27) and double dipped winning a gross & net skin for his birdie on # 13.  Defending A flight Champ Grant Clarke continues to roll beating Brad Webster 6 & 4.  Grant shot a gross 60 today and his net 51 won him first place net, a closest to the pin on # 2 and a 3rd place low putts (28).   These 2 will meet in the final 4 next week.  Cliff Adams continues to be HOT shooting a gross 67 today winning 3rd net with his 57.  His birdie on hole # 12 gave him a gross skin and a 4 up lead on Jim Reich.  But Jim did not throw in the towel, he gets up and down on the next 4 holes with 4 consecutive 1 putts to square the match up, all tied going to hole # 17.  But then Jim 3 putts on # 17 & # 18 to lose 2 up to cliffy.   In the Featured match of the A flight Jim “Cough” Mansfield vs. Carlos “ B.L.I.T.C” Elenes.   Carlos takes a quick 2 up lead as Matic is still “high” on his meds.  Jimbo fights back to even the match heading to the back nine.  They both play solid golf going to hole # 15 where Carlos just misses his par putt so Mansfield lags his 6 foot birdie and taps in for a 1 up par.   Mansfield then puts the pressure on Carlos hitting the green on # 16 thinking he will win his first closest to the pin of the year leaving it 20 feet right of the flag…  Oh no says Carlos as he sticks in just below the flag looking like a tap in but as we get closer the ball gets farther… Carlos about to measure as Mansfield says just wright down 5’2” , looking puzzled,  Carlos says no its closer than that…they don’t call me Jimbomatic for nothing it was 5’2”….   So Mansfield tries to call another “Babe Ruth” shot saying let me slide this one in the right side window…Jimbomatic does just that making a 20 foot 3 ½ foot breaker for his first bird of the day…  So after all that Carlos should be done right? …No No No… Carlos clutches up and top’s Mansfield with a birdie of his own… (Of course the only 2 birds on that hole ) Deja Vu , because last week Carlos made a 20 footer and Mansfield taps in a 3 footer on # 8 which of course was the only 2 birds on that hole… Ok back to the match.   Mansfield makes par after getting out of the fairway bunker.  Carlos has an 8 footer for bird to square up the match but pushes his putt for a tap in par.  Mansfield on # 18 hook’s his 6 Iron over the orange fence on the dirt/mud …but Carlos wasn’t watching, still deciding whether to grab the driver or 5 wood, asked Jimbo where did you go?  Suddenly Mansfield has laryngitis , So Carlos asks the other players “is he on the green , in the water”  They were not watching either…so Carlos plays it safe and finds the fairway with his 5 wood leaving him 80 out.   Now seeing where Mansfield’s ball lies, suddenly has a big grin on his face as he watches intently making sure Jim doesn’t ground his club being “in a hazard”  Jimbomatic picks it clean fading it left of the bunker and spins it on the green leaving him  7 feet below the hole…  But Carlos is a fighter and sticks his approach shoot 10 feet below the hole and makes his birdie putt.  Jim now can finally put him away but misses his bird and then are going extra holes.   Carlos hits 2 identical shots from the tee and fairway landing almost in the exact place on the green with a 10 footer again but this time to win the match as Mansfield missed his 20 foot bird.  Carlos just pushes it and now then are back to 18th tee again… Long story Long… Carlos needs to chip in for a 5 and just misses so he tells Mansfield to pick his bird putt up its good and they shake hands… That is the only thing Mansfield won on the day getting shut out on all Money.   Carlos beats Mansfield on the tie breaker winning 3rd place gross (64) and his Closest to held up on # 16.  In the consolation flight Jim Emmerling takes down Bill Vanettes 2 & 1 and Fermin Andres takes down Bill McClury 6 & 5.

Ok, on to the B Flight.  Defending B Flight Champ Conrad Caprez wins first place gross with his 67 but his match with Mike Goldberg was not easy at all.  They went back & forth on the front nine taking turns winning 7 out of first 9 holes and pushing the other 2.  So Mike has a 1 up lead going to the back.  Again going back & forth Mike finally closes DC out on # 17 with his 4th birdie of the day (most on the day) but none held up for skins, Mike settles for a 3rd place net finish with (56).   Bryan Coll jumps out to a quick 5 up lead on Patrick Kanczuzewski after 8 holes.  Bryan has a 4 up lead with 6 to go, but hear comes Billy Mills, Patrick wins 13, 15, 16 and after tying hole # 17 Patrick is 1 down going to 18.   The comeback kid wins 18 with a par and then wins the playoff hole as Bryan’s approach shot finds the water and concedes the match.  Tommy Watson takes advantage of the lift, clean & place as he uses his 7 iron to perfection taking a 5 up lead on the front nine.  Although Mully shot a gross 68 (2nd gross) and birdies # 14 & 18 Tommy was just too much as he closed out Gary 4 & 3.  Tommy wins first net with his 53.  In the featured B flight match Bob Lindner needs 19 holes to take down Ray Coats.  This match was a back & forth battle as they both matched each other with birds on # 5 & # 9 but it was Ray Coats eagle on # 17 that got the match to all square heading to # 18 but after they both bogeyed Bobby took him down on the first extra hole playoff to advance to the final four vs. the “Scott” next week.  In the consolation flight Don Graham and Clinton Cox literally fight this won out. Dispute 2 birds on the front 9 by Clint, Don Graham took a 2 up lead to the back nine.  Clinton then won the next 6 holes to close Don out 4 & 3.  In the other match Pat O’Brien took on Dan Williams both players ended up shooting a gross 71 but Dan’s net 56 gave him a 2nd place net finish.   Pat needed 3 birds on the front to take a 2 up lead heading to the back.  Dan squared the match on # 14 but Pat’s par on # 16 gave him a 1 up lead and after pushing 17 & 18, Pat held on to a 1 up victory.

In the C flight- Defending Champ JP David took a 3 up lead after birding #9.  Bob Lopez came fighting back to get the match to all square on # 14.  It was all square going to # 17 when the S… hit the fan, Bob scored a 7 & 9 on final 2 holes handing JP the match 2 up.  JP finished 2nd net with a 62 as Bob Lopez was 3rd gross with his 81.  Frank Welte advances to final 4 when Don Dow was a no show and he will now face Paul Hailey who defeated Frank McBride 4 & 3.   Paul finished 1st net in the C flight with his net 58. Paul had 2 birds today with # 12 holding up for a net skin.  In the Consolation flight both matches were won 5 & 4 as Dan La Rue took down Jack Walsh to advance to the finals vs. Craig Cessna who beat Roger Campuzano.   Dan La Rue continues to stay hot, not only did he show up early and host today , then staying late to pick up all the contest stuff, he shot one of his best rounds, a gross 69 and net 51 winning first place gross in the C flight.  Craig Cessna settled for 2nd gross with his 78.

After 2 week we have some good trends and bad… Fermin Andres goes double deluxe winning long drive again for both regular and seniors for the 2nd time in a row.  Hole # 17 was eagled again for the 2nd week in a row, this time by Ray Coats.   Don Graham has the first hole in one of the year in week 1.  Frank McBride has the highest score on a hole for the 2nd week in a row a 11 again today.  Jim Mansfield hasn’t won a skin and is not leading in any stat category.  The Sheriff is now a deputy.  Mike Goldberg leads everyone with 6 birds this year and Jason Bouzos is the best putter and player in the club… What the hell is going on?  I’m with you Johnny “when do we get to play an away course”?

Ok…I have made an executive decision …If you finish 1st, 2nd or 3rd place in your match play flights you will automatically be on the Match Play team when we play Casa Del Sol in April….
