PRESIDENT CUP ROUND 1 HIGHLIGHTS

First, I would like to thank Leo for setting up the course to challenge us for our first major of the year.  Only 5 players could shoot under par net today.  Second, I must have got a dozen texts, emails or phone calls this morning asking if the tourney was still on…. come on guys, I can understand if you saw lightning heard thunder and couldn’t drive to the course because of flooding but it was just Bryan Coll, George Grayum and John Knapp from Heaven watering down the course for us to get the greens ready for the Presidents cup.   Thirdly, Tommy Watson finally made a prediction that came true… before anyone tee’s off he said, “Hey Jimmy I predict a hole in one today.”  Mike Goldberg must of heard him because right before he was going to tee off on # 1, he ran back into the club house to ask “hey am I in the Hole in One fund?”  No, was the response, so Mike gave his $5.00 to the Host Jim Reich.  Well, when Mike was on hole # 13 he got a text from Jim Reich to say thanks for the donation cuz Brad Webster just got his 3rd career hole in one on the # 5 100- yard hole.  Bradley, who was playing in the last group, told the pro shop wait till I get in before you open that tap.  Well, Mike had the last laugh as he one upped them by hitting his own hole in one on the # 16th 190- yard hole, as he faded his tee shot over the sand trap as it hit the green and rolled towards the blue flag and disappeared for Mike Goldberg’s first hole in one of his career.   It didn’t take long for the “thirsty” guys in the club house to hear the news and they rushed to the bar to get their free drink “put this one on Mike’s tab, we will wait for Brad to get in to have our 2nd on him” We also had 2 eagle today as Chris Sollom and Ed Flores both eagled # 17 to kill each other from getting a gross or net skin.

Ok now to why we woke up, walked over the wet pavement, jumped into our rain dropped covered cars and drove to the course this morning, The President Cup.   Ray Coats is your first-round leader with a net 54.   Ray shot a 68-gross winning first place in the C flight and double dipped for his bird on # 12 for a gross & net skin.   2 strokes behind is Gary Mullican with a 56 net.   Gary wins first place in the B flight with gross 67.   Our last year’s leader from round 1 was Mike Goldberg, he is now 3 strokes behind this year’s leader. Mike wins first place net in the B flight as he shot a net 57 and he shares the hole in one pot with Brad ($310.00) and gets a gross & net skin for his ace on # 16 and a closest to the pin on # 4.   David Baldwin and Bob Malachowski shot a net 58 each to be the only other 2 players to be under par net today.  David wins 1st net in the C Flight as Bob wins 2nd net in the B flight.   Brad Webster is not in the Top 20 for the Cup but did win low putts today with 28 and double dipped for his hole in one on # 5 with a gross and net skin.   5 guys shot even par net (59) today and are still in the hunt.  Jim Mansfield shot a 62 gross and won first place in the A flight, 2nd place low putts, long drive regular flight and had 1 of his 5 birds hole # 3 held up for a gross skin.   Cliff Adams also shot 59 net but his 67 gross wins him 2nd place gross on a tie breaker.   Mike Santuci net 59 wins him the tie breaker with a par on hole # 6 and a first-place net in the A flight.   Craig Cessna and Jim Hardin also shot a net 59 winning 2nd & 3rd place net in the C Flight.   Jim Hardin also got a net skin for his bird on # 2.   Other winners today; Vanettes and Fabrizio win a closest to the pin award.   Caprez wins long putt on # 13.   Fermin Andres wins Senior Long Drive.  Clarke’s 30 putts gets him a tie for 2nd place low putts.   Jim Reich gets the only bird on # 1 for a gross skin but you know what happens when you birdie the first hole yikes!   Frank Welte double dips for his bird on # 7.  Clinton Cox gets a gross skin for a bird on # 12.   Serigstad gets a net skin for his bird on # 8 and Watson gets a net skin for his bird on # 14.   Ok you must wait 2 weeks before we can see who will be our first major winner of the year.   Next week we are off for Mother’s Day.
